So much is written and said these days about mental health that it can all get very confusing. Yet that confusion disappears in an instant when we discover that the key to mental wellbeing is getting our essential emotional needs met in healthy ways.

Inevitably there will be times in our lives when circumstances prevent us from meeting our needs for connection, status, achievement, sense of control and so forth adequately enough – when we have suffered trauma or a serious loss, for instance, fail to get a much wanted job perhaps, are worrying excessively or are caught in a toxic relationship. We can become very distressed as a result, and are sometimes driven to meet our needs in unhealthy ways.

Usually we find ways to cope with the stresses that life throws at us, even if our wellbeing suffers for a while. But sometimes things can get too much and we may become overwhelmed, leading difficulties to spiral. Knowing why we feel as we do can be incredibly helpful, but sometimes we might also need a helping hand to help us.
