HGI Membership Levels
now align with the SCoPEd Framework’s columns
The Human Givens Institute (which holds the register of human givens therapists) was one of the six organisations involved in developing the SCoPEd shared standards framework for psychotherapy and counselling. The others are the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP), the United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP), the National Counselling and Psychotherapy Society (NCPS), the British Psychoanalytic Council (BPC) and the Association of Christians in Counselling (ACC). The registers of all six are accredited by the Professional Standards Authority and the SCoPEd framework was officially adopted by all partners in February 2023.
Each organisation has developed appropriate pathways for their own members to move between the SCoPEd framework’s three columns (A, B and C), in accordance with their own chosen career trajectory, given the appropriate experience and training; these were shared and agreed with their fellow organisations.
This page outlines the new mechanisms and membership levels that have been developed by the HGI in response, to enable HGI members to move between columns. These came into effect in February 2024.

Movement Between Membership Categories
Members will be able to move between our membership categories, aligned to the standards of the SCoPEd columns, where they have the relevant skills, training, knowledge, experience and inclination to do so. Application forms are now available in the Members’ Area.
To be able to move between membership categories you will need to demonstrate that you:
- Meet the practice requirements
- Are safe, effective and ethically sound in your practice
- Meet the SCoPEd competencies for the relevant column
The application process is based on recognition of prior learning (RPL). This allows you to draw on all of your training and experience to demonstrate that you meet the membership requirements. It is a one-off application. You will not be required to do this every year. Once at a particular membership level, you can simply renew your membership each year.
Becoming a Registered Member
Registered membership is open to all those who have completed and passed Part 3 of the Human Givens Diploma. This automatically places you in Column A of the SCoPEd framework. To register as a member, you must complete the membership application, including the ethics section, and provide details of your insurance and supervision arrangements. The hours of training and practice undertaken to complete the Diploma are counted in applications for Accredited and Senior Accredited Membership (see the relevant guidance links below for further details).
If you are currently a Member of the HGI, you will automatically become a Registered Member.
Becoming an Accredited Member
You can apply to become an accredited member if you meet the practice requirements and can demonstrate the necessary competencies for SCoPEd Column B.
You can find the application form in the members area. It has been designed to support your development and reflection. It is in three sections:
- Practice requirements
- Competencies
- Case studies
You will be required to provide evidence that you meet the practice requirements (including hours of therapy practice and training) alongside a statement from your supervisor. In the competencies section you will be asked to draw on your own casework to demonstrate that you meet those competencies in SCoPEd Column B that are not already taught and assessed within the HG Diploma. In the final section, you will be asked to draw upon your learning and experience to respond to three case studies.

Becoming a Senior Accredited Member
